CHANDIGARH: Struggling hard to get space for parking the impounded vehicles at Traffic Police Lines-29, the traffic cops are eyeing additional spaces, including outside the area, and adjoining the premises in Sector 29.
Traffic police personnel have sent a proposal to senior officials, asking them to hand over a chunk of land located outside the police lines.
They have also demanded an extension of their dumping ground, while acquiring more land alongside the premises. The shortage of space has forced traffic police personnel to store the impounded vehicles at different locations, and at different police stations.
DSP (administration), traffic, Pawan Kumar, said: "The towing of illegally parked vehicles runs round the clock, besides the challan drives, in which several other vehicles are also impounded. Moreover, we do not release the impounded vehicles in cases of drunken driving without court orders. Until then, impounded vehicles are parked at the traffic lines. So, the size of the complex is proving inadequate."
About 300 to 500 vehicles are regularly impounded and seized by traffic police personnel every day in Chandigarh. Hundreds of vehicles are being towed by traffic cops every day, and the parking lot of the police lines is already overcrowded and overflowing with impounded vehicles.
Traffic police sources said: "The chunk of land outside the police lines belongs to the Chandigarh Administration, where there is already a transit camp for paramilitary forces. This piece of land can reduce the burden of impounded vehicles parked inside the traffic lines premises."
There are occasions when impounded vehicles are also parked outside the premises under extra security cover due to shortage of space inside the premises.
