IIT-Madras gets chair in Infosys founder name

Kris Gopalakrishnan has set up three chairs in computational brain research
Chennai: Looking forward to focusing on computing aspects – architecture and model of the brain, that includes memory/processor relationship and neuromorphic computing, Kris Gopalakrishnan, IIT Madras alumnus and co-founder of Infosys, launched the ‘N.R. Narayana Murthy distinguished chair in computational brain research’ at IIT Madras campus on Saturday.
Kris Gopalakrishnan has set up three chairs in computational brain research at IIT Madras, with an endowment of Rs 10 crore each for its research and allied activities.
“This is a very special day in my life and I would like to thank Narayana Murthy, the person who played an important role in my life, teaching me how to integrate to corporate life,” said Kris Gopalakrishnan.
The chair is intended for occupancy by leading mid-career and senior researchers from academia, laboratories and industry and will be operated as an inter-disciplinary institute chair. The chair will complement a brain research centre that will come up in Bengaluru, as well as chairs created in the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and postdoctoral fellows sponsored at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, in the United States.
“The three chairs set up by Kris will provide an integrated perspective of brain research and put India on the map of leading-edge research on the subject,” said N.R. Narayana Murthy in his address.
Explaining the annual returns towards operational expenses associated with the chair, he said a globally competitive compensation package will operate the chair. The first occupant of the chair is Dr Mriganka Sur, Prof of neuroscience and director of the Simons Center for the social brain at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States.
