GURGAON: The winds of change against VIP culture may be blowing in Delhi, but are yet to waft through Gurgaon.
Every morning, a blue beacon-fitted jeep of deputy labour commissioner (DLC) RK Saini takes the wrong side near Sispal Vihar on the road leading to Sohna Road and continues on the wrong side on Sohna Road, to avoid navigating in dense traffic. TOI found out that Saini’s jeep (No.
HR 36N 0022) is allowed to take the wrong side around 9am every day, in the presence of a traffic cop, to go to work in Old Gurgaon. He lives in South City II.
Most of the vehicles from South City II, Malibu Towne, Sispal Vihar, sectors 48, 49 and 50 take this road to go towards Subhash Chowk that connects Sohna Road with HUDA City Centre Metro station, NH-8 and Old Gurgaon. "As traffic going towards Subhash Chowk is generally heavy in the morning, the DLC is allowed to take his official vehicle on the wrong side so that he doesn’t have to wait in the traffic jam. The irony is that all this happens in front of a traffic cop, standing at a distance of just 10 metres," said Siddharth, a resident of Malibu Towne.
Some regular commuters claimed that two accidents happened last month, owing to disturbance caused by the DLC’s vehicle in the opposite lane.
Police also refused to help the public. "One day, I knocked the window of the jeep and told the driver about the nuisance caused by them. The driver said, ‘You don’t know he is the labour commissioner’. On April 16, I decided to report it to police. I called up 100. Within a few hours, I got a call and a cop told me that they can’t help in this case, as it is the DLC’s jeep. I was told to approach higher authorities," said Siddharth.

When contacted, the DLC, Saini, told TOI, "Generally, I take the ‘Medanta road’ to go to my office. I might have taken this road only once or twice. To the best of my knowledge, I have not used the wrong lane. However, if it has caused any inconvenience to people, I will make sure to keep a check on it". Later in the day, Saini called TOI and denied that his vehicle was bending traffic rules and dodged the question on its registration number.
When the issue was brought to the notice of R C Bidhan, additional labour commissioner, he assured that immediate action would be taken. "I will ensure no official from our department causes any inconvenience to the public," he said.
