Watch Batman and Superman Clash in New ‘Dawn of Justice’ Trailer
The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice teaser trailer leaked a few days ahead of schedule, ruining the April 20th IMAX event planned by director Zack Snyder. Rather than have a cameraphone-shot, subtitled version spreading online and spoiling the fun, Warner Bros instead dropped the official trailer on YouTube late Friday.
In the trailer’s opening minute, we hear audio from a series of news programs debating whether Superman is a “savior” or a menace as the camera glides towards a giant statue dedicated to the superhero overlooking the Metropolis skyline. Spotlights hit the monument and the words “False Idol” are graffitied in red on the Superman statue’s chest.
In the second half of the trailer, we’re introduced to Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne, who stares reluctantly at a Batman suit – Wayne’s crime-fighting days are long over in this film – while his butler Alfred (played by Jeremy Irons) tells him, “That’s how it starts. The feeling, the powerlessness… that turns good men cruel.” After quick glimpses at the new Batmobile, the titular showdown between Batman and Superman is finally showcased as the Dark Knight asks the Man of Steel, “Tell me, do you bleed? You will.”
Although the trailer provides an extensive first look at Affleck in action as Batman – including an armored suit that gives Batman the white-eyed look achieved in both the comics and cartoons – the teaser doesn’t show Jesse Eisenberg as the film’s main antagonist Lex Luthor or Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Luthor does appear in voiceover however, saying ominously, “We know better now, don’t we? Devils don’t come from hell beneath us… they come from the sky,” suggesting he’s perhaps behind the efforts to demonize Superman.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to open March 25, 2016.
