Short Films from Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador Named Winners of the OAS Contest on the Right of Access to Information
April 17, 2015
The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Network of Transparency and Access to Information (RTA) announced the winners of the First Edition of the Short Film Contest "Get Informed and Improve your Life!," aimed at sensitizing the public about the importance of the Right of Access to Information.
The Short Film Competition was launched by the Department for Effective Public Management (DGPE) of the OAS last October as part of an awareness campaign on the importance of the Right of Access to Information as a fundamental tool for the full exercise of the rights of citizenship and thus to improve the quality of life of the citizens of the region.
The initiative invited college students studying film, visual arts and graphic design to prepare a two-minute film addressing the social use of the Right of Access to Information.
Of the 34 audiovisual pieces received, a jury composed by the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Edison Lanza, and representatives from the World Bank, the Regional Alliance for Freedom of Expression and Information, the RTA and DGPE/OAS selected the three winners:
First prize: "“Get Informed and Improve your Quality of Life," by Áquila Cavalieri Frota, Universidad Estácio de Sá, Brazil.
Second prize: "Access to Public Information (The Right to Know)”, by Ferney Andrés Cortés Bautista, Francisco José de Caldas University, Colombia.
Third prize: "Superhero," by Bryan Gonzalo Camacho Alencastro, Institute of Visual Arts in Quito, Ecuador
The award ceremony will take place in the framework of the IX International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC), that will be held in Santiago, Chile, on April 21 – 23, 2015.
As part of the prize, the three winners will attend the IX Conference, during which they will present their films and participate in a workshop with Chilean filmmaker Marcelo Ferrari.
