GURGAON: A mini-truck caught fire on Friday evening near the Rajiv Chowk roundabout, triggering a traffic jam at the crucial intersection.
The roundabout is prone to massive traffic snarls during peak hours, with traffic coming from four cities - Alwar, Gurgaon, Jaipur and Delhi.
After the news of the fire in the moving Eicher mini-truck around 8pm reached the fire department, four fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
"We sent one fire tender from Bhim Nagar, two from the Sector 37 fire station and one from the Sector 29 fire station. The fire was brought under control in an hour," said Birbal Sharma, fire officer of Gurgaon.
Dalbir Singh, ACP (traffic - expressway) said, "A short-circuit triggered the fire in the mini-truck near the exit before Rajiv Chowk. It was ferrying groceries. Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire".
A senior official of the expressway concessionaire - Millennium City Expressways Pvt Ltd (MCEPL) - said the jam could be cleared within 45 minutes as the traffic police arrived in no time. "The mini-truck coming from Manesar caught fire while moving towards Gurgaon at the opening of the flyover near Rajiv Chowk," said Navin Kumar, an eyewitness. Another witness, Vikas Kumar, said, "I was stuck in the jam for around 45 minutes."
