Fiji Netball Experience Beats PNG

What happened:

The Fijian netball team got off to a good start in the first round of the Digicel/Punjas International Netball Series yesterday.

This was after the team defeated Papua New Guinea Pepes One 57-39 at the Vodafone Arena.

But it was the experienced players in the team which steered the team to victory after the Unaisi Rokoura-coached Pepes put up a good challenge. Led by captain Winnie Mavara who delivered well at centre, the team were more organised.

But with veteran players like Taraima Rara, Maria Lutua, Alesi Waqa, Matila Waqanidrola and skipper Mere Neiliko, the Fijians led 24-15 at halftime.

Fiji coach Kate Carpenter made changes in the third quarter with Afa Rusivakula replacing Nina Cirikisuva in goal attack (GA) and Reijieli Daveiua replaces Sera Dakuitoga in wing defence (WD).

Pepes goal shooter Jeperth Tulapi came in the third quarter and showed good skills which helped her side close the gap 57-39.

Big Play: PNG Pepes played a well defensive game and disrupted the Fijians from extending their lead.

Star Turn: The veteran players in the Fijian team played a key role in the win.

Comments: Fiji coach Kate Carpenter said: “I thought the game was bit patchy, the first quarter was good. But we made mistakes like obstructions. We will be asking for more effort in our second game. I thought our defenders did a power of work.”

PNG Pepes captain Winnie Mavara was impressed with the performance.

“We knew Fiji will be tough but our girls really did well. Our defenders were really good they had good elevation.

“We are really on track for the Pacific Games in July.”

PNG Pepes One meets PNG Pepes Two at 3pm today while Fiji plays Singapore at 5pm today.
