Lethbridge man charged in basement blaze

A 22-year-old Lethbridge man has been charged after a fire broke out in his basement suite Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to the blaze and made a surprising discovery.

Officers allege the man was attempting to produce marijuana resin when the furnace in the home ignited gas fumes created by the process and causing the fire.

No one was injured, but damage is estimated at $80,000 – $100,000.

Matthew Nixon is charged with arson by negligence and production of a controlled substance.
