Hours before the campaigning for the crucial election to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) concluded, Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the BJP and other opposition parties of running a “malicious campaign” against her but added that it would not pay dividend and she would remain in the hearts of the masses.

Hinting at a comment that BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh’s made some time ago, she said, “Those who have no idea of Bengal and its culture, are indulging in character assassination and saying ‘bhag Mamata bhag’. They have come from outside and have the temerity to ask me to leave the state. I leave it up to you to give them a fitting reply,” Mamata said at a massive road show in south Kolkata to drum up support for her party candidates.

She was accompanied by TMC MP and actor Dev and several other party leaders and cine stars from Tollywood. The rally began from Sukanta Setu at Jadavpur and concluded at Gopalnagar in Alipore.

“They are not in the villages. They are not in the city. They are only resorting to slanderous campaign. One can’t rule Bengal sitting in Delhi,” she said in an obvious reference to BJP.

“They don’t have workers to put up party flags. They are taking services of publicity firms for campaigns and are blaming us that we are spreading terror. They are tearing their own flags and are blaming us for that. Even if there is a family feud in any area they are blaming us,” she said.

Festive offer

Mamata said provocative statements were being made by opposition party leaders to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the state.

She also took a dig at actor and BJP leader Roopa Ganguly who was allegedly assaulted at a rally.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee walked the rally for sometime but had to retire midway. “I tried to walk the entire length but gave in. Didi has a lot of stamina. Who can match her?” Chatterjee said.

The Tollywood stars, too, were seen taking intermittent breaks from walking and most boarded four-wheelers to cover a major part of the rally.
