Mumbai airport runway shut for 4.5 hours for crash landing drill, days after Khajuraho incident

This exercise comes days after a Jet Airways flight had to be evacuated from the runway at Khajuraho airport.

A emergency evacuation drill for crash landing was conducted on the main runway of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) on Friday.

The main runway was shut for 4.5 hours during the drill, leading to some delays on flights arriving and departing from the airport.

This exercise comes days after a Jet Airways flight carrying 59 passengers and eight crew members had to be evacuated from the runway at Khajuraho airport after developing some technical problems while landing on Monday.

The  drill at the Mumbai ariport, which began at 11.30 was conducted to test the emergency plan- how passengers, crew would be evacuated in the event of a crash landing at the airport. Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) officials said that such drills are mandatory and routine.

During the drill, flights were taking off and landing from the secondary runway of the airport. On Friday afternoon, Jet Airways warned its passengers on a social networking website that ‘Due to main runway closure, all arrivals and departures at Mumbai Airport are delayed up to 30 mins until 1500 hrs today.’

According to the Jet Airways officials, B737-800 had experienced a technical problem with the landing gear after landing at the Khajuraho airport.
