Nagpur: Congress on Friday organised a sit-in agitation and a morcha to protest the Land Acquisition Bill in Nagpur.
Ahead of the public rally in Delhi on Sunday, the city and district units of Congress in Nagpur held a dharna, culminating into a protest march from the RBI Square to the Collector office.
Former Union Minister and AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik and senior leader Vilas Muttemwar were among those who participated in the agitation.
“The Modi government has demonstrated that it is against the small and marginal farmers. This land law will make life difficult for farmers as they will be dispossessed,” said Wasnik.
Congress would continue its agitation till the Bill is scrapped by the NDA government, said Muttemwar.
“The UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh went into all aspects in detail and drafted a land acquisition law in 2013. The BJP supported it then. In fact the parliamentary standing committee that cleared the draft was headed by BJP’s Sumitra Mahajan who is now Lok Sabha Speaker.
“But as soon as BJP came to power at the Centre, it tweaked the draft to favour industrial houses,” he said.
