Jyothsna is a daily-wage labourer. Her paternal grandparents, with whom she has been staying for the past three months, plan to get her married. To them, the thought of making her continue her education appears nowhere on the horizon.

After she cleared her class 10 exams from the Zilla Parishad High School at Bilalpur in Kohir mandal in 2013-14, Jyothsna, whose parents passed away around nine years ago, has been working as a daily labourer to eke out a living. Prior to this, she had been staying at a hostel, and financially supported by her maternal grandmother Bandla Manemma.

Around three months ago, Jyothsna moved to Rompally village in Bantaram mandal of Ranga Reddy district where her grandfather Talari Sammappa and grandmother Ramulamma stay.

Mandal Education Officer D. Anjaiah and Bilalpur ZPHS Headmaster Satyanarayana traced the girl to Rompally. Moved by her plight, they made all-out efforts to get her to restart her education.

“I had discontinued education for the past one year. It was not possible to start education again. I am not interested in pursuing education any further,” Jyothsna told The Hindu .

Mr. Anjaiah attributed her reluctance to her past experiences. “Jyothsna lost her parents at a very early age and she has been facing problems for about a decade. Hence, she is reluctant to restart education. But counselling will bring change in her,” he felt.
