Taoiseach Enda Kenny has been urged by one of his own backbenchers to establish an All Ireland inquiry into the movement of IRA sex abusers as a "matter of urgency".

Fine Gael TD for Meath East Regina Doherty has expressed fears that alleged abusers moved into the Republic, as well as those who facilitated their movement, may pose a risk to children today.

Ms Doherty, who has been a vocal critic of Sinn Fein's handling of the IRA sex abuse scandal, called for victims to be provided with a "safe and confidential structure" within which they can share their experiences.

"It is of critical importance that such a Commission is founded and implemented in a timely fashion to allow for the comprehensive and transparent examination into the movement of alleged child sex abusers across both jurisdictions," Ms Doherty wrote.

The Fine Gael backbencher also asked the Taoiseach to ensure that, in contrast to the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains, immunity is not offered to perpetrators.

"I believe that the horrendous series of events which took place in this regard were solely the result of and nothing but an abuse of power, and that this abuse of power had absolutely nothing to do with furthering the goal of a 32-county republic," Ms Doherty stated.

Calls for an inquiry intensified following the recent cases of victims Mairia Cahill and Paudie McGahon.
