Municipal authorities took up an encroachment eviction drive at the new bus stand here on Thursday.
The authorities were surprised when one of the encroachers constructed a shop at the entrance to the new bus stand.
The encroacher had constructed walls and had roofed it with asbestos sheets in the early hours of Thursday. The authorities cleared the asbestos sheets and demolished the wall.
About 25 shopkeepers had set up stalls and eateries on the pavement meant for passengers at the bus stand.
Official sources said that encroachments on Santharaman Temple Street were also cleared.
Sources said the drive would be taken up periodically.
