SHIMLA: Road connectivity to tribal district of Kinnaur & Spiti valley located along China border snapped after 300-metre stretch of national highway-5 sunk around 200 metres near Nigulsari in Kinnaur district. While administration is claiming to reopen the road in next couple of days, residents said it's likely to take more time. This happened due to a landslide following which, a large number of vehicles queued up on the Kinnaur side.
Sources said that around 2km-long stretch from Nigulasari road was damaged.
Since traffic came to a complete halt, sources said that people were forced to climb a hill to reach Taranda village. To deal with the situation, the administration held a meeting on Thursday to chalk out a plan to repair and reopen the road at the earliest. A senior official, requesting anonymity, said that district administration has issued directions to get the stretch operational within the next couple of days.
Former Kinnaur MLA Tejwant Singh Negi said that traffic is suspended since 2pm on Wednesday. "If the road isn't opened soon, people living in the area would face shortage of essential commodities. Things could worsen for patients being referred to Indira Gandhi Medical Coilege and Hospital and Rampur hospital," he added. He said that road was slowly sinking near Nigulsari for around 20-25 days but concerned authorities failed to take note of it.
