3 held for ‘role’ in attack on astrologer

Three more persons who were allegedly involved in the attack on Nagaraju, the astrologer of Saroornagar, were arrested by the police on Thursday.

The accused persons, P Venkanna Babu, Kalamanchi Mariah and Kalicharan, all belonging to West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, had different roles in the attack, the police said. A total of 10 persons were involved in the attack. Four persons including Bhotham Srinivas Rao, reportedly the prime accused, was caught a week ago.

Meanwhile, a hunt is on to catch the three hired killers.

Five booked for kidnap

The Banjara Hills police, following a court referred complaint, registered a case against five persons, including an employee of a private finance company, on the charge of kidnapping and threatening a businessman two months ago. The businessman, Naqeeb Mahmood, of Banjara Hills stated that five persons -- Mohd Abdul Razaak, Sainath, Syed Noor, Mohammed Abdul Raheem and Qaiser, following some financial disputes reportedly kidnapped him from his office. Later, they took signatures on blank documents and abandoned him at an isolated place after collecting gold ornaments and cash. In his complaint, Mahmood said that he approached the police and made a complaint but no case was registered.

A retired executive engineer of GHMC, M.A. Mannan, who was caught accepting Rs. 15,000 bribe from a contractor seven years ago, was sentenced to one year’s rigorous imprisonment by a local court here on Thursday. Mannan was working in GHMC’s south zone when he was trapped by ACB officials.
