The inauguration of Basava Jayanti celebrations, that coincided with the return of the seer of Moorusavir Mutt Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami to Hubballi, has provided a platform for pondering over the reasons for the seer’s announcement that he would abdicate the peetha and what needs to be done to keep the seer from leaving the mutt again.
Although it was the inauguration of the Basava Jayanti celebrations, the centre of attraction was Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami who returned to Hubballi on Thursday after being persuaded by devotees in Hubballi, led by the former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar.
While some of the speakers chose to circumvent the contentious issue which forced the swami to leave the mutt, Sri Siddalinga Swami of Tontdarya Mutt, Gadag, spoke on the reasons for the seer’s exit and asked the seer to drive mischief mongers away from the mutt.
The former MLC Mohan Limbikai, Mr. Shettar and the former Minister C.M. Udasi did not elaborate on the developments that led to the seer’s exit from the mutt. However, they did make a point clear, that of taking every step to avoid any repetition of similar developments in the mutt.
Sri Shivamurthy Shivacharya Swami of Taralabalu Mutt compared the Moorusavir Mutt to an “in-laws’ place” for the seer who was forced to leave it because of harassment. “Now that Mr. Shettar and others have assured that there would be no repetition of such developments, we want the seer to focus on developing the mutt,” he said.
Sri Shivaratri Desikendra Swami attributed the credit of bringing the swami back to the mutt, to Mr. Shettar. “When the swami left Hubballi, there were talks about Mr. Shettar being the responsible for his departure. To prove that he was not responsible for that development, Mr. Shettar himself has taken the initiative of bringing the swami back,” he said. He also asked the seer to “learn to hiss like a snake if not bite to shoo away the bad elements threatening the mutt”.
However, Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami, who everybody thought would bare his heart out on the reasons for his departure from the mutt, chose to remain silent on the issue. But he clarified that he would not make a similar mistake on the issue of succession. “Any future decision concerning the mutt will be taken under the guidance of the heads of various mutts and with the consent of the devotees,” he announced.
