Priyanka Chopra, who plays Kashibai, the first wife of Peshwa Baji Rao I in Bajirao Mastani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ambitious period drama, has had her costumes sourced from Pune, Nashik and Nagpur. The look took an entire year to put together.

The film, which stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the title roles, is based on the romance between the Peshwa and his second wife Mastani.

Our source reveals, "In Bajirao Mastani, PC plays typical Peshwa wife, will wear nose rings (handpicked from Nashik and Pune) and will look as dignified as he status demands. She will wear the traditional Marathi sari, the Navvari (11 meters; Peshwin style). Throughout the film, she will be seen wearing over 85 navvaris sourced from various places by the film's stylist Anju Modi."

"I started work on the film in April last year. I travelled to the Ajanta and Ellora caves and visited Paithan in Aurangabad. I also visited the Shivaji Museum and made a few trips to Pune to do my own research on the clothes and jewellery. The sarees were difficult to source as they aren't available now. Also, we wanted bright colours as Priyanka's character is that of a young, confident woman," Anju explains.

They chose saris in colours like marigold yellow, fuchsia pink, rose pink, sea green, aqua blue, ivory and blood red. In terms of look, they also made sure they sourced Maratha jewellery, mostly from Pune. "We have also picked up different kind of nathnis and shelas. Shelas are an integral part of the Maratha woman's wardrobe," Anju says.

Working on the film was also a great experience for Anju as until now she had only worked on other cultures. "It was an eye-opener for me to work on this film as I had never been exposed to Maratha jewellery. Priyanka too was extremely interested and involved with the look and personally looked into her clothes," says the stylist.
