Suspecting that the ‘juvenile’ arrested for the murder of the minor girl of colony number 4 might be a major, the police on Wednesday sent a team to Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh to get evidence of his age.
The accused, who has reportedly confessed to the crime, was sent to the observation home on Monday night.
Superintendent of Police Parvinder Singh said, “The team has been asked to find the birth record, the school record or any other proof of the age of the accused.”
The family of the accused, who is a class X student, had claimed that he was 14 years old. However, the police had been told by informants that he was not less than 17 years, and might well be a major, said sources.

The SP said that if there was any discrepancy in the school records here and the records in Azamgarh, then they would move the court to get ossification tests done to ascertain his biological age.
The father of the girl met Inspector Jaspal Singh, SHO of the Industrial Area police station, and said the crime could not be the work of the boy alone and others were involved.
However, the SP said it had been established that the accused committed the crime alone.
In his interrogation, the accused had reportedly told the police that he kidnapped the girl during a power breakdown on Friday night, took her to the residence of a relative who was away, and strangled her.
Around 3 am, after the police had ended the search for the girl, he took the body to the nullah, where it was later found, stripped and sexually violated it.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested more persons for rioting and throwing stones at the police after the girl’s murder on Saturday. They include three women, Rekha, Maya and Mahindro, besides Brahm Dutt, Sheikh Hamid and Uday Raj, all residents of the colony.
