Pickpockets have a field day at Kotla during match

Pickpockets had a field day during the IPL match at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground on April 12 with at least 10 cases of stolen wallets or mobile phones reported to police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Pramaditya said they had decided to form a special team to catch pickpockets.

The team will be deployed inside the stadium in uniform as well as in plainclothes.

Besides, police have also decided to paste photographs of habitual offenders inside the stadium. “We have decided to paste photographs of notorious thieves and pickpockets inside the venue. We are preparing the posters of pickpockets,” the police officer said.

According to police, Anuj Gupta, a resident of Sonepat, approached police on April 12 after the match.

He told police his cellphone, which was in his pocket, was stolen when he had gone to buy cold drinks from a stall.

“A case was registered under Section 379 of the IPC at I P Estate police station of Central Delhi and, after registering the case, we scanned the call detail records of the phone. With the help of technical surveillance, we came to know that the phone was switched on even after it was stolen,” a police officer said.

To handle case of mobile phone theft, the Central district police has also roped in special staff of the district to trace the stolen cellphones.

“Besides trying to trace the phones through technical surveillance, special staff personnel are also scanning CCTV footage to identify the thieves,” the police officer said.
