Speaking to mediapersons in Gorakhpur, Yogi said: “The state government is not taking action against the municipal official, who provoked the poor families to embrace Islam to save their houses.”

He added that the official concerned was an employee of the Rampur Municipal Board that comes under the state urban development department led by Minister Azam Khan. “The entire government is accountable for what is happening and it should explain its stand on the matter,” Yogi said.

On Tuesday, BJP leaders led by party’s Rampur district president Baldev Singh Aulakh met the affected families and asked them not to even think of converting under any pressure. “We extended our support to these families and said we should pressurise people from other communities to convert to our religion,” Aulakh claimed. The leaders also asked the Valmiki families to feel free to contact BJP leaders any time for help.

Earlier, the district administration, in a press release, had stated that there are no plans to demolish the houses or to relocate the affected families. The district magistrate had also claimed that a probe has been instituted after it came to light that Sibtain Nabi, an employee of the Municipal Board, had allegedly instigated the Valmikis to embrace Islam to save their houses from demolition.
