PUNE: Janwani, a city-based non-governmental organization, working for heritage conservation, will conduct a ‘Lal Mahal to Shaniwarwada Heritage Walk’ at 4pm to mark World Heritage Day on April 18. Participants are expected to gather at the Delhi Darwaja entrance of Shaniwarwada.
The wada was the seat of Peshwas’ power when it reached its zenith and is a national monument. Lal Mahal was the abode of young Shivaji Maharaj who stayed here with his mother Jijabai and learned his earliest lessons.

“Thousands of tourists visit Shaniwarwada daily but there are no trained guides at the site to provide a memorable experience. Fascinating stories of Shaniwarwada remain untold,” said Ajit Apte, a volunteer with Janwani.
Janwani’s deputy director (heritage) Prajakta Panshikar said, “This walk will be a regular activity at Shaniwarwada. It is designed by our heritage volunteers to educate people about the history and heritage of Pune. We shall bring the wada to life by using visual aids. An hour-long walk will substantially enhance the tourism experience. It will also help conservation efforts. We intend to train more heritage enthusiasts for this purpose. Initially, the walk will be arranged on Saturdays from 4 pm. The medium of communication will be Marathi, Hindi and English. People can register on-the-spot for the activity.”
Janwani also spearheads the annual Virasat Pune Heritage Festival and the Pune Heritage Walk.
