Paper and packaging giant Smurfit Kappa has agreed a deal to buy UK based Inspirepac for £43.5m.

Inspirepac, which employs 279 workers, is a non-integrated corrugated, high quality print and display business.

It is owned by the Logson Group and operates two packaging plants as well as two other plants in the north of England.

Smurfit Kappa said the deal, which is expected to be earnings enhancing immediately, is expected to close in the second quarter of this year.

It also said the deal will further enhance Smurfit Kappa's market leading position in the UK market, and build on its existing capabilities in the high quality print market segment.

Recent reports have suggested that US-based International Paper is considering an €8.1 billion takeover of Dublin-listed Smurfit Kappa.
