Judicial officers, lawyers and the litigant public of Mettur town will get a unique privilege when an air-conditioned combined court complex will be inaugurated in the town by the end of this month.
The work on the construction of the court complex has already been completed and a couple of Supreme Court Judges are expected to take part in the inaugural function.
The chambers of judges and court halls will be fully air-conditioned on the new premises. The Mettur complex is the first subordinate court complex to get the air-condition facility in the entire State.
The Madras High Court is the only court in the entire State to have this facility at present.
The new campus will house four courts, sub-court, munsif court and two magistrate courts. The State Government has already sanctioned Rs. 47 lakh for the air-conditioning project, D. Jayachandran, Principal District and Sessions Judge, told presspersons recently.
At present, the sub-court and the munsif court are functioning from the old municipal office premises, and both the magistrate courts are functioning from separate rented buildings.
He said that a proposal had been submitted to the Madras High Court for the construction of a Law Chamber on the district court campus in the city with adequate facilities including a library.
A revised estimate was also submitted in the recent past.
Mr. Jayachandran said that at present 13 judicial officers employed in different courts in the district, including officials in the rank of district judges, were without quarters.
Land for quarters
The Government allotted adequate land on Yercaud road for the construction of the quarters. Due to encroachments on the allotted site, the project of construction of quarters could not be executed. Steps had been initiated to remove the encroachments, he added.
