GVK Power & Infrastructure has commissioned the first 82.50MW unit of Shrinagar hydroelectric project developed on Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand.

Of the four 82.50MW units of the 330MW project, the first unit is connected to the grid and is generating at full load, The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The company is expected to connect the second and third units to the grid this month, with plans to join the last unit by next month, PTI said citing GVK Power & Infrastructure.

Approximately 12% of the clean energy generated at the hydroproject will be supplied to the state for free of cost.

Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation will purchase the remaining 88% of electricity generated at the plant, under a power purchase agreement.

Commenting on the project, GVK founder, chairman and managing director GVK Reddy previously said: "This project is GVK’s another significant step towards contribution of the country’s infrastructural development. We are happy to have lived up to the faith reposed in us.

The 248m long and 90m high project will use the net head of around 66m between the diversion dam and the Power House to generate electricity.

The water conductor system comprises two Head Race Tunnels, RCC Troughs, Power Channel and Penstocks.
