Bandar Seri Begawan -

With emeralds the size of quail eggs, crystal-encrusted shoes and a diamond tiara, this bride was in no danger of being outshone as she married the Sultan of Brunei’s son.

Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah, 22, wed Prince Abdul Malik - second in line to the throne - at the 1 788-room palace in Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan.

The newlyweds’ matching gold outfits were both embellished with diamonds, while Raabi’atul carried a bouquet made of dazzling gems rather than flowers.

The prince, 31, is the youngest child of the sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, one of the world’s richest men, and his wife Queen Saleha.

Sunday’s enthronement ceremony was the highlight of 11 days of wedding festivities, which end on Wednesday.

The couple dressed in traditional attire and sat on gilded thrones in the Istana Nurul Iman palace.

The bride, a former computer data analyst, wore a jewellery set known as a parure, thought to be borrowed from her mother-in-law.

It included a diamond tiara studded with emeralds.

A diamond necklace with a central pendant of three emeralds the size of quail eggs glittered around her neck, while a brooch of two egg-shaped emeralds dangled from a diamond setting.

On her feet were Christian Louboutin heels encrusted with Swarovski crystals as well as a chunky gold anklet.

After the ceremony there was expected to be a lavish banquet for up to 5 000 guests.
