Row over disposing off unclaimed bodies heats up in Masula

April 13, 2015 05:33 pm | Updated 05:34 pm IST - MACHILIPATNAM:

Machilipatnam Municipal Commissioner N. Maruthi Diwakar on Monday lodged a complaint with the Directorate of Medical Education against the District Government Hospital (DGH) authorities, for alleged violation of official procedure for disposing off unclaimed bodies and human organas.

The DGH should hand over human organs and unclaimed bodies to the municipal authorities for proper disposal. On Sunday, a few human organs were found near Kendriya Vidyalaya here, triggering panic among the locals as well as the police as they were found dumped in the open ground.

Mr. Diwakar on Monday confirmed to The Hindu that the DGH authorities did not obtain prior permission to dispose off a few human organs and an unclaimed body, and those were handed over to a Class IV employee Vasu of the municipality on Friday for the purpose of proper disposal.

“I haven’t received any request or application from the DGH Superintendent to receive the unclaimed organs or body. A decision to suspend Mr. Vasu has been taken,” said Mr. Diwakar. Mr. Vasu an employee of the Municipality deals with disposal of unclaimed bodies at the DGH.

The Commissioner further stated that the issue of violation of official procedure to accept and dispose of the human organs and unclaimed bodies would be brought to the notice of the District Medical and Health Department. “Unless the DGH obtains prior permission, the municipal authorities will not render services of disposing off the unclaimed bodies in coming days”, added Mr. Diwakar.

However, the police have registered a statement of the Municipal Commissioner and investigating the case.
