Art mega-collectors have amassed 6,800 pieces

Art megacollectors Don and Mera Rubell — whose Miami-based family collection includes 6,800 works by 833 artists from Jeff Koons and Keith Haring to Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, Lisa Yuskavage and Richard Prince — showed off a humorous side at the Brazilian SP-Arte fair.

“We’ve been together for half a century, which is a miracle,” sighed Mera during a panel at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, according to Web site ArtNews. “What makes it an amazing achievement is that we fight every day,” she cracked.

The couple has just published a 700-page catalog of their vast holdings, but, “I don’t think this is even 10 percent of the collection,” Mera said.

They’d made 20 studio visits in one day during the fair.

Added Don: “The art that ultimately proves most interesting is the art that makes you uncomfortable when you see it. It’s easy to buy art that’s pretty or that reminds you of something else.”

Among 140 galleries showing at the fair — which wrapped Sunday — are London’s White Cube and New York’s Marian Goodman, David Zwirner and Gagosian.
