This Punjabi kudi rocks with a 'dhol'
CHANDIGARH: The delicate looks of Jahan Geet Singh, 16, are deceptive, considering that she plays the dhol, which is usually expected in big, burly hands. The Class XI student of Carmel Convent School, Chandigarh broke that stereotype with ease, going on to become India's youngest Dholi. Jahan Geet first wielded the dhol at 12, when most kids would find it difficult to hold a "tilli" and "dagga".
Although she is a skilled dholi, her journey began with a coincidence. It started with her family members appreciating the dhol rendition of her cousin. "I chipped in and asked how it would be like if I also played the dhol. The entire family loved the idea. Then, my father looked around for a teacher and soon there was a dhol around my neck," she recalled. From then on, there was no looking back. In one year, she was playing the dhol in events across the Tricity.
When asked if she feels apprehensive about her place in a traditionally male dominated field, she said, "I always wanted to do something different and promote the rich culture of Punjab. Through the dhol, I also want to divert the attention of youth from western music to our traditional Dhol."
As for what she likes best about the instrument she said the dhol has made its way from villages to Bollywood and rock bands. "I feel it is the only instrument which requires no support, except power and passion of the drummer. It can be played anytime, anywhere and in any atmosphere. It needs no electricity, no power back-up, no arrangements, nothing but spirit".
Jahan is comfortable with both solo and group performances and has played in private as well as state functions. She also received the state award in 2013. Now, she is eyeing the international domain. Her parents Harcharan Singh and Parminder Kaur are proponents of folk musical arts.
