ECR to be converted into a four-lane road

Road widening will give fillip to trade, industry: Pon.Radhakrishnan

The Centre has planned to convert the two-lane road from Chennai to Kanyakumari along the east coast of the State into a four-lane one, according to Union Minister of State for Surface Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan.

Addressing a seminar on ‘Make in India’ organised by the Industry Cell of the Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Saturday, he said the Centre had been receiving demand for widening the road. Calling upon the industrialists to make use of the ‘Make in India’ initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said the Centre would gradually stop importing military equipment, and encourage domestic companies to start manufacturing defence equipment.

The initiative would open up innumerable opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said there was a need to create awareness among the rural masses on ‘Make in India’ initiative. The Centre had planned to involve rural people in the movement to help them join the mainstream of development.

Stating that there was abundant opportunity in solid waste management, he said each and every waste should be made a raw material for another product.
