IPL 8 Rajasthan Royals v/s Delhi Daredevils: Southee takes Rajasthan to victory in cliffhanger

Delhi Daredevils were ahead for a long time in the game. Rajasthan were looking down the barrel at 79/4 in 11 overs. But then Deepak Hooda scored a brilliant half-century and Southee kept his nerve in the end with that boundary.

Delhi Daredevils were ahead for a long time in the game. They were ahead for about 31 overs. Rajasthan were looking down the barrel at 79/4 in 11 overs. But then Deepak Hooda scored a brilliant half-century and Southee kept his nerve in the end with that boundary. Delhi just know how to lose games from good positions, don't they?

Over 20

FOUR! Brilliant shot, fast and almost a yorker on middle stump, Southee had great presence of mind. He drove it hard through extra cover, beat the long off rushing in, and got the boundary. Rajasthan win off the last ball!

Full ball on middle, Morris can only slam it to cover for one. 3 off 1.

FOUR. Brilliant shot, very low full toss on middle, Morris plays a standing sweep to fine leg, great shot.

Full fast ball on middle, Southee can only slog it to long on for one. 8 off 3.

Full flat ball to Southee, can't get it away, 12 needed off 6. Great over, 7 runs and 2 wickets.

OUT! Bowled 'im! Fast wrong un, Faulkner did not read it unlike Morris. Slogs across the line, ball crashes into middle stump. 

This time Morris goes in the air towards long on, but it drops short of long on. 12 needed off 8.

SIX! What a shot! Chris Morris has just effortlessly slogged Tahir's wrong 'un into the deep midwicket stands. Like it was easy. So easy.

OUT! Huge wicket! Imran Tahir is the bowler, ball is a little wide outside off, and Hooda swings hard, but straight down the throat of long on. Hooda made 54 off 25.

Over 18

FOUR. Lucky. Faulkner gives room, Coulter-Nile follows him, but Faulkner gets an inside edge that runs to the fence. 19 needed off 12, 166/5.

Full ball on off and played down to long on for one.

Full toss, picked over the on side for two runs.

Wide ball, poor effort at this stage.

FOUR. Fifty for Deepak Hooda in just 22 balls. Good short ball, chest high, but Hooda plays a terrific fend-off cut that finds the third man boundary! This innings has changed the game.

FOUR. Faulkner gives room, goes after a half-volley, gets an edge which flies over the keeper for four.

Over 17

Attempted reverse sweep, takes the keeper's helmet on the way and goes for a single! RR 149/5 after 17 overs.

Wide ball outside off, Hooda misses, called a wide even as the keeper appealed for a catch.

Single off the last ball, RR 141/5 after 16 overs.

James Faulkner is the new batsman. He gets a quick two to keep the run rate moving.

SIX! Hooda continues the big hitting! Down the track, picks up the ball while its still turning and lofts it over long on for another six.

OUT! Rahane is gone, he comes down the track and plays across the line, misses and the ball hits leg stump. Wait, they are looking at the no ball. It's not a no ball so he's gone.

Six! That should have been caught. Similar full toss, Hooda doesn't get everything behind it this time. Manoj Tiwary on the deep midwicket fence had the ball almost straight down his throat. He spilled it and the ball went for six....15 off the over. 130/4 after 15 overs.

SIX! Hooda moves to off again, another full toss and Hooda swings it over deep midwicket for six!

Wide outside off, Rahane has to reach out and he just manages to biff it to long off for one.

Full toss outside off, Hooda slogs it to wide long on for one. Missed out.

Hooda moves towards the off side, bowler follows him, Hooda misses and looks for the wide signal from the umpire, but it won't come.

Over 14

SIX! Length ball next, and Rahane swings it for a flat six over deep midwicket. 115/4.

OH DEAR. Misunderstanding between the batsmen, Hooda sets off for the single very late. The throw comes in at the bowler's end, and Hooda is nowhere in the picture. Yuvraj though fumbles an easy take, and Hooda just makes his ground. Awful.

Down the track this time, but Rahane can only find deep cover. He's too cultured a batsman.

Rahane turns the ball away through covers for one. 80 off 41 needed.

FOUR. Brilliant end to the over, slower ball outside off, little wide, and Hooda pierces the gap between point and gully. RR 104/4.

FOUR. Premeditated, but Mathews played right into Hooda's hands. Hooda walked across, Mathews followed him with a low full toss, Hooda flicked it behind square for four. Great shot.

SIX! Hooda swings a full ball hard, gets height as well as distance. Right from the meat of the bat, six into the stands behind long on.

Hooda goes over mid on but on the bounce to long on, just one.

Hooda comes in, drives to long on for one. 79/4 after 11.

OUT! Stuart Binny is gone, Tahir does Binny for both line and pace. Binny plays down the wrong line, on the off side. The ball crashes into his pad, right in front, before he can get his bat down. Plumb.

Rajasthan need 11 + per over. Imran Tahir continues.

OUT! Bowled, Nair is gone, Mishra foxes him in the flight and the ball crashes into middle stump. RR 74/3 after 10 overs.

FOUR. Reverse swept for four.

FOUR. Nair steps out, drives Mishra inside out through covers. Just clears a diving cover fielder, and gets four. Oooooh, says the crowd.

Over 9

Rahane goes for the flick, rapped on the pads, huge appeal from Tahir. Umpire thinks it was going down, RR get a single. 63/2 after 9 overs.

Four runs off 4 balls off the over so far.

Batsman go for a couple, the throw comes in on the second run and Karun Nair is just in. The third umpire shows Nair had just slid his bat in before the ball hit the stumps.

Rajasthan run a quick two off the last ball. 57/2.

FOUR. Nair sweeps beautifully through square leg for four.

OUT! Amit Mishra is the new bowler. Smith gives him the charge, gets it in the meat of the bat but hits it straight down the throat of long on.

Oh. Down the track, decieved in flight, almost scoops it straight back to the bowler. Gets a single though to mid off. RR 50/1 after 7.

FOUR. Short and slightly wide, Smith opens his stance and slams it through square on the off side for four. Very flashy.

FOUR. Slightly short and wide and slammed through cover point for four. RR 42/1 after 6 overs.

Huge swing down the ground, and misses. Smith was nowhere near the line of the ball but went for the shot. It was the slower delivery which just bounced through to the keeper.

Coulter-Nile continues but this is like starting a fresh innings, for RR.

OUT! Sanju Samson is gone, length ball on middle, Samson pulls and hits it straight to deep midwicket. RR 37/1.

Huge apeal from Mathews as Rahane sweeps and gets hit on the back pad. But it was probably sliding down off.

After 4 overs, RR are 35/0.

FOUR. Rahane goes over square leg, finds the boundary again. Coulter-Nile is bowling too short, too wide.

Misses with the square drive, the ball was short and wide but swung away as Rahane went for it.

SIX! Length ball on middle and off, Rahane swings over the on side for six.

Driven down the ground, can't beat mid off but they get one. RR 23/0 after 3 overs.

Samson looks to give room but in the end decides to play the ball into the on side for one.

Oh. Rahane tapped the ball to the off side and set off for a single. He was sent back and had to dive to make his ground. Direct hit would have been interesting.

FOUR. Crip, clean drive through covers for four. It went so fast the fielder had barely moved before it met the fence.

End of the over, Rajasthan 10/0 after 2 overs.

Samson goes over wide mid off and clears extra cover, but the ball stops as it bounces. Two runs.

FOUR. Bad ball from Coulter-Nile, short outside leg, and flicked away. Should have been just one though, the fielder at fine leg overran it and then dived to make a hash of it. Very comical.

Over 1

Straight ball, Rahane gets a couple to end the over, RR 2/0 after 1 over.

Fishing outside off, huge appeal from Delhi, but there was no edge at all.

Rahane goes for a drive without moving his feet and misses.

Rahane and Samson open the innings for RR.

Daredevils finish on a very competitive 184/3. The good thing about this innings was everyone contributed to the score. From Mayank Agarwal's early assault to Shreyas Iyer's fluency, Yuvraj and Mathews playing cameos and Duminy getting some big hits at the end, the DD lineup performed well for a change. 185 is a big target, but far from an impossible one.

Over 20

SIX! Bad ball, full toss on middle and Duminy swings it straight down the ground for six, this time it cleared long on comfortably. Delhi Daredevils 184/3 after 20 overs.

Brilliant yorker to Mathews, he could only prevent it from hitting the stumps. A quick single taken though. 

With a single, Daredevils up to 177. 2 balls left.

SIX! Duminy gets a full ball on leg stump, he has a big bat swing, connects well and just clears deep midwicket!

Second ball is tucked away to deep mid wicket, batsmen scamper back for two. 

First ball is a yorker, Duminy gets a single.

Angelo advances, yorks himself, plays the ball out to mid off for one. 9 off the over, DD 167/3 after 19 overs.

Low yorker to Duminy, he cant beat the infield, just a single to square leg.

Tim Southee bowls on leg stump and Mathews flicks him to deep fine leg for one.

Over 18

Length ball again, pulled to deep square leg for one this time. DD 158/3 after 18 overs.

SIX! Length ball on off, Mathews swings over midwicket, gets enough bat on it to carry the ball over the fence.

FOUR. Swivel pulled for four, beats short fine leg.

DROPPED. Angelo goes down the ground again, finds long off, but it was hit very hard. The fielder was close to the rope, he took the catch, tumbled backwards and then spilled it.

FOUR. Mathews hits Faulkner down the ground for four with power.

Last ball is driven to long off for 1, DD 141/3.

Angelo Mathews is the new batsman, and he gets a head-high wide as he misses with the pull.

OUT! Yuvraj is gone, he pulled a short ball to deep midwicket. Was probably beaten a little for pace, got in high on the bat. Good innings anyway, 27 off 16. 

Yuvraj biffs the ball down to long off.

SIX!! Slower ball from Faulkner, Yuvraj picks it, lifts it high over the on side, and a fair distance back into the stands. DD 136/2 after 16.

Two runs, Yuvi pulled towards square leg and set off, deep midwicket running in cuts it off.

SIX. Yuvraj hits Faulkner straight down the ground for six. Beautiful swing of the arms.

Over 15

Last ball is a yorker and Yuvi can get just one by blocking it into the off side. Good over from Southee. 119/2.

Duminy swings across the line to a slower ball outside off, no result.

Flicked away through the on side, and Yuvraj still finds deep midwicket running in.

Yuvraj plays a controlled straight drive down the ground for two runs.

Over 14

Last ball is defended and DD are 113/2 after 14 overs.

Yuvraj thrashes Hooda straight down the ground but can only get two.

Over 12 

Wide full ball, Yuvraj drives hard but finds short cover, 98/2.

WIDE. Too wide from Hooda, that could have been 3 wides.

He defends to the off side and gets a single.

Yuvraj Singh comes out to the middle, to a big cheer.

Over 11

OUT! Slower ball, Iyer was always going to play the big shot, and he went for it down the ground. Got on it too early, ball goes straight up and Tim Southee at mid on takes a good catch. Good innings - 40 off 30.

Slammed to sweeper cover for one, the torque on that shot didn't match the result.

Good length ball on middle, played out to deep midwicket for one.

SIX! Short ball on the hips, Iyer swivel pulls over long leg for six, that was a beautiful shot.

Chris Morris comes back.

Over 10

Iyer charges down, Tambe flattens the line and Iyer slogs. He doesn't connect and gets an edge to the on side. DD 84/1 after 10 overs.

Tambe beats Duminy's bat with a top spinner.

FOUR. Bashed straight down the ground, as an arrow, four more.

SIX! Tambe bowls full, straight and in the slot. Iyer lifts him over wide long on for six.

Over 9

Delhi reach 71/1 and it's time for the timeout.

SIX! James Faulkner is the new bowler. Iyer clears his back leg and slogs Faulkner over the long off boundary.

FOUR. This time Duminy goes along the ground and finds the boundary through cover.

DROPPED. Duminy goes down the track and lofts the spinner over extra cover. Deep extra comes rushing in, dives, takes the catch for a moment and spills it. Would have been a fascinating catch.

Over 8

Short, wide, Iyer cuts but finds the point fielder. DD 59/1 after 8 overs.

Iyer flicks Hooda behind the wicket but cannot beat short fine leg.

Duminy looks far more comfortable with the spin than any of these Indian batsmen!

Over 7

Iyer tries to break free, thrashes Tambe through covers, but can't beat short cover. DD 54/1 after 7 overs.

Tambe deceives Iyer with the turn and the ball goes out to the off side off an edge.

Over 6

Single off the last ball, 51/1 in the powerplay.

Yorker length ball and Iyer plays it to midwicket for one. 50 up for DD.

Duminy drives Hooda through the off side for one.

Over 5

JP Duminy is the new batsman, DD 46/1 after 5 overs.

OUT! Chipped back and 43-year-old Tambe has got Mayank Agarwal caught and bowled! Mayank was trying to loft the ball over the bowler's head.

Over 4

FOUR. Edged, and four. Agarwal was beaten for pace and length, he almost fell over, but ended up getting an edge which flew to the third man fence, very fine. 18 off the over, DD 44/1.

Cut away again, but it goes slower to the fence, and it's cut off on the boundary.

FOUR. Now he late cuts the ball from outside off, hits it a bit square and third man can't get to it.

FOUR. Flicked away off the hips, and there is no fine leg.

FOUR. That was not timed well. Mayank Agarwal was wrong-footed for the short ball, he ended up scooping it straight back, but it reached the fence down the ground anyway.

Over 3

Single off the last ball, DD 26/0 after 3 overs.

FOUR. Perfect cover drive, right in the slot for the drive and Iyer was in the best position. Southee is getting tapped.

Tucked away to third man for one.

SIX. Agarwal tonks Southee over wide long off for six. It was a full ball outside off.

Over 2

Now Iyer plays without much foot movement. Delhi 13/0 after 2 overs.

Oh. He pokes his bat out at a widish ball outside off. There is movement on the wicket and the ball swings away ever so slightly.

FOUR. Picked over the on side, and Agarwal has teed off.

Over 1

Driven outside off, gets the edge and goes to third man for one. DD 8/0 after 1 over.

FOUR. Agarwal goes high over the on side, clears the infield easily and goes for four.

Swing and a miss fourth ball.

Widish ball outside off from Southee, moves away, and Agarwal carves it through the off side but finds point.

Three runs off the first two deliveries, good running from Delhi.

The Rajasthan fielders are out to the middle, and so are the DD batsmen.
