‘Honour killing’: Victim’s family allege political nexus behind inaction

A murder case was registered after the recovery of the body but no arrest has been made yet.

Alleging nexus between police and politicians, family members of Swaraj Singh, 31, whose body was recovered near Rajpura on Wednesday protested near Dugri flyover on Saturday.

The victim’s family alleged that accused Gurpreet Singh Kairon is not being arrested due to his political connection. Demanding his arrest, the victim’s family also staged a protest after the bhog ceremony Saturday. It is suspected that Kairon hired contract killers after he came to know about the relationship between the victim and his cousin sister. The victim was missing for a week and a missing person complaint was lodged with the Dugri police.

Gurmukh Singh, a family member of the victim, said that a murder case was registered after the recovery of the body but no arrest has been made yet. Sensing the tension, heavy police force was deployed near Dugri flyover and senior officers assured arrest of the accused. SHO of Model Town and Dugri police stations also pacified the family.

Reportedly, Kairon is a steel trader and a producer in Punjabi film industry and the nephew of a Congress leader. Kairon’s family claims that the deceased committed suicide and they have nothing to do with the matter. Inspector Manjit Singh from Dugri police station said that police is conducting raids to arrest Kairon who is absconding.
