One held for thefts on trains

A special railway police team led by Thillai Natarajan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Railways, Chennai Central Sub-Division has cracked theft cases and arrested one person. The thefts were committed in running trains within the limits of Arakkonam and Jolarpet Railway Police Stations in the last one month. .

Rs. 3.70 lakh worth property recovered

The police team which included E. Saravanan, Inspector, Arakkonam Railway Police Station arrested V. Rajendran (33) of Karayanchavadi, Chennai, at the home signal in the Arakkonam railway station on Friday and recovered stolen property worth Rs. 3.70 lakh found hidden in the bushes near his residence. The recovered property included 15 sovereigns of gold jewels and four cell phones.

According to a Railway Police release, investigation revealed that the accused had committed the theft of a bag containing nine sovereigns of gold jewels in the Bangalore-bound Lal Bagh Express at the Arakkonam station on the evening of March 12, a bag containing Rs. 4000 cash and an ATM card in the Bangalore-Chennai Mail in the early hours of March 28, and a bag containing seven-and-a-half sovereigns of gold jewels, three cell phones and a Samsung tab in the Mumbai Mail at the Arakkonam station in the early hours of the same day. The culprit had stopped the train by pulling the chain and escaped in the incident involving the Bangalore-Chennai Mail. In the incident involving the Mumbai Mail, the bag owner had resisted the theft, but the culprit snatched the bag from the owner and managed to escape.

Similar thefts were also reported from different trains at different places in the Jolarpet Railway Police Station limits on March 24 and 26.

The special team was formed by Seema Agarwal, Inspector General of Police, Railways, J. Baskaran, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Railways and P. Vijayakumar, Superintendent of Police, Chennai Railway District.
