AHMEDABAD: Navrangpura police on Saturday arrested co-owner of an immigration consultancy firm for duping 22 aspirants of over Rs 28 lakh.
Police are searching for the second partner in the firm who has been absconding for the past three months.
Ajay Khanderia, 46, a resident of Vasna, had given an application of complaint against Ankit Fadia and his brother Hardik, owners of Safal Visa Consultants at Sahajanand Complex near Swastik crossroads, in December 2014.
He said that the duo had promised him work permit and visa for South Africa after taking Rs 50,000 from him in September.
"Khanderia, manager at a pharmaceutical company, was told by the duo that they charge Rs 2.5 lakh out of which they were to be paid Rs 50,000 up front and Rs 2 lakh after he got the visa and permits in installments. As they asked for money with cheque, he believed them and followed the procedure. However, from November the firm officials did not pick up his phone and started evading him, following which he got suspicious and approached police in December," said a Navrangpura police official.
Police later got more applications from the duped aspirants from Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Tamil Nadu who claimed that they had paid the firm money for immigration in European countries, the US and South Africa.
Navrangpura police station inspector R V Desai said that they have caught Hardik from near his residence in Memnagar.
