Eleven people died in a bus accident in Bardhaman district of West Bengal on Friday.

The bus overturned following a collision with two other buses. It was carrying people of a nearby village to Mayapur in the adjoining Nadia district.

The incident took place in the Dewandighi area, about a kilometre from Bardhaman town, police said.

The locals reportedly came to the rescue of the passengers trapped inside the overturned vehicle. They had the bus moved with the help of tractors.

The locals, along with the police, rushed the passengers to the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, where 11 were declared brought dead.

The bus was carrying around 70 passengers who were travelling to Mayapur, police said, adding that the other buses were also carrying people from the same Khudkuri village. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has directed District Magistrate to pay Rs two lakh as compensation to the next of the kin of the victims, State minister Swapan Debnath told reporters at the hospital.
