Several party functionaries of Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi were arrested in Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Perambalur, and Karur districts after they attempted to lay siege to the toll plazas condemning the steep increase in toll.

The protesters demanded complete withdrawal of toll levied on vehicle users at the toll plazas set up along the national highways.

They said toll plazas operated by private parties had increased the toll from 10 per cent to 40 per cent and were “looting” the public.

In Tiruchi, around 160 party functionaries were arrested after they attempted to lay siege to the toll plazas at Vazhavanthankottai near Thuvakudi, Samayapuram, and Thiruparaithurai. The protest at Samayapuram toll plaza was headed by the party’s State deputy general secretary P. Manoharan.

Similar protests were held at the toll plazas at Manavasi near Mayanur in Karur district, Thirumandurai near Mangalamedu in Perambalur, and Lembalakudi near Namana Samuthiram in Pudukottai district. Those arrested were later released.
