NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Netflix
named the cast for its upcoming 1970s hip-hop drama The Get Down yesterday. The line-up includes: Dope’s Shameik Moore, Paper Towns’ Justice Smith, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete’s Skylan Brooks and Tremaine Brown Jr. The series is written, directed and produced by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield). The Get Down will follow the birth of disco, punk and hip-hop in New York.
 
With Ellen DeGeneres now backing creator-focused video platform Vessel, Google is feeling the pressure to get in the game. In a letter from YouTube sent to creators and obtained by Bloomberg, the platform revealed that the SVOD version of YT will make its debut some time this year. More importantly, the letter assured that revenue from the service will be shared with video creators. Vessel will offer the same vids without the pre-roll ads for an undisclosed fee, the letter said. Check out the full text of the letter here.
 
FremantleMedia UK
launched digital media company Shotglass Media. Kat Hebden will head up the operation as Managing Director (she was previously the Head of FremantleMedia UK Interactive), and work to create a new slate of original content along with its current food channel Munchies and football fan channels Full Time Devils and Blue Moon Rising. Shotglass will also encompass all digital and social media activity for FremantleMedia UK shows such as Britain’s Got Talent, The X Factor, Celebrity Juice, The Apprentice and Take Me Out. Hebden’s senior team will include Audrey Lang, Head of Business Development, James Cooper, Executive Producer of Original Programming, and Neil Smythe, Head of Sport. Fremantle Media’s other digital entities include Tiny Riot!, UFALab and Spring.
 
To celebrate the YouTube’s KianAndJc hitting the one million-subscriber milestone, the duo kicked off a fan contest. Viewers are being asked to submit their most creative ways of declaring their adoration for the two with the hashtag #KnJMillionContest. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to LA, an opportunity to be in a forthcoming video, and free tickets to Kian and Jc’s national tour later this year. The KianAndJc channel premieres two videos a week; titles include How Babies are Made to Waxing Best Friend Challenge.
 
MTV unveiled its digital and social plans for the 2015 MTV Movie Awards pre-show and main event on April 12 at 7:30p ET. This year, MTV will include Twitter’s Periscope video broadcasting feature, augmented reality from Orad Hi-Tec Systems, Red Carpet Report livestream, and an “Unleash Cam” by T-Mobile. MTV will also once again tap social influencers Jerome Jarre, Lily Singh (Superwoman) and Elisabeth Jakovenko to cover the awards on social networks.
 
 

CONTENT MEDIA
 

Millennial-focused social TV platform Beamly is ramping up its engagement features with a set of new tools for users and networks. Kicking off yesterday, Beamly introduced Frictionless Fun for fans to participate in a social TV conversation with one-click; and Creative Democracy for show pages contribution and quiz creators. Later this month, Beamiy will launch Throwback Pages to highlight TV programs from the past. “We’ve found that Millennial page engagement of up to 65 percent heightens our ability to drive tune in around live TV overall,” CEO Jason Forbes told Cynopsis.
 
Won’t be able to catch the season premiere of Game of Thrones, and worried about seeing spoilers on Facebook? Google’s recently filed patent reveals that it’s looking to find a solution to one of social media’s biggest problems. Quartz reports that the tech would cut off text of TV related content on social feeds, prompt a spoiler alert to the user and give them the choice to reveal the status update or not. Although the patent was filed, Google did not reveal if it was actively developing the product. Netflix and Google have already created temporary fixes and plug-ins that censor some of the spoilers on social media.

 

 

VC FUNDING + INVESTORS
 

TV sell-side technology provider clypd announced a $19.4 million Series B round of financing led by global media company RTL Group, along with Atlas Venture, Data Point Capital, Duke University, TiVo Inc., Transmedia Capital and Western Technology Investment. The company will use its total of $30 million in funds toward its platform to help TV media owners adopt programmatic TV. Clypd partners include ESPN, Cox Media Group and Discovery.

ADVERTISING + AD PLATFORMS

 
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) released the Digital Audio Buyer’s Guide to help creatives, planners and buyers invest in digital audio advertising. The guide includes five reasons that digital audio should be part of marketer’s media mix, such as: digital audio is exclusive; digital audio is becoming a “mobile-first” experience for many; digital audio is cool, because the consumer is now in control; digital audio is growing like crazy; and digital audio compliments any media plan. In a blog post yesterday, the IAB noted that 79 percent of audio consumption takes place while people are engaged in activities where visual media cannot reach them (Nielsen).
 
SpotXchange unveiled its programmatic TV whitepaper yesterday. Titled A Programmatic TV Guide for Sellers Part II: The Challenges of Changing Patterns of Video Consumption, key points include:
–      Programmatic is crucial, not optional, for maximizing revenue from cross-screen video.
–      Broadcasters must increasingly look to horizontal yield management – managing rate and audience fulfillment across channels and viewing streams rather than as individualized buckets of siloed impressions
–      Growth in video consumption has yet to translate to competence in cross-screen and cross-stream monetization.
–      Convergence of video is inevitable, but cannot occur until the industry has collectively resolved a litany of issues related to currency, viewability and transactional transparency.
 
Video tech platform provider Kaltura announced its new Universal Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution for the DASH and Common Encryption (CENC) standard. Called Kaltura’s Modular DRM, it allows content rights owners and OTT providers to transition without disrupting service, and stream premium content regardless of browser, device or platform.

DigitasLBi tapped Max Fresen for the new role of Senior Vice President, Creative of Experience Design. Fresen joins Digitas from Isobar, where he was Senior Vice President, Executive Creative Director.
 
PBS Digital Studios appointed Brandon Arolfo as Senior Director Of Content Development. Arolfo is a Grammy-nominated executive producer, known for producing digital content for AOL with CafeMom Studios and developing MCN MyCountryNation.
 
Fuhu
, creator of the nabi Android tablet for kids, hired Keith Neva as Vice President of Sales. Neva was most recently Vice President of Sales at Griffin International Companies, Inc., and has the served in sales roles in the past at companies such as Yamaha, Westinghouse and Monster
 
Charlie Morrison was promoted to Vice President at Red Wagon Entertainment. Morrison joined Red Wagon as a Creative Executive in 2012.
