Apple immortalizes Mr. Spock's salute in secret emoji

Mr. Spock—the Vulcan science officer played by the late Leonard Nimoy in "Star Trek"—has been immortalized as an emoji in Apple's latest update to its operating system for iPhones and iPads.

Enthusiast site iMore on Friday listed the steps for typing Spock's "Live long and prosper" Vulcan salute emoji into the Apple mobile device.

The emoji is also accessible in OS X 10.10.3, Apple's latest update to its desktop and laptop computers.

New emojis are among the major features of the newly updated iOS and OS X systems.

But for now, the quickest way to enter LLAP is to set up a keyboard shortcut, and iMore lists the steps:

1. Copy the symbol from this tweet

2. Go to Settings and tap General, and tap Keyboards, then tap Shortcuts.

3. Tap + at the top right.

4. Double-tap next to Phrase to bring up the edit menu, then tap Paste.

5. Set your shortcut—the iMore example used "llap"—then tap Save.
