Drinking water scarcity plagues Silk City

BERHAMPUR: Rajashree has to trek around two km from Gajapati Nagar everyday to fetch a bucket of drinking water from the water post nearest to her home. Sandhya of Shakti Nagar also has to do the same because their residential areas are among the 30% localities in the town that are yet to be brought under the piped water scheme. "We face lot of difficulties in fetching drinking water and have to wait for hours at the stand post," said Rajashree.
At a meeting with officers of Public Health and Engineering Organization here recently, the corporators said the government is yet to take any step to solve the nagging drinking water problem in the town. It will assume larger proportions as many people throng the town during Thakurani Yatra. "We demand that all areas be covered under the piped water supply on a war footing," said corporator of ward no. 5 R Murali Mohan.
"We have decided to supply water through tankers in such areas. Water will be distributed to corporators under the supervision of the respective corporators," said PHEO executive engineer Deba Sundar Mohapatra. The PHEO has seven tankers, while two will be brought from Bhubaneswar.
The PHEO has given a 124-crore proposal to the state government to lay 80-km pipelines. The government is likely to finance the project under the Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (UIDF), Mohapatra said. The town requires around 58 million litres daily but needs 54 mld from all sources, while the quantity reduces during peak summer.
