That the families in which transgenders are born should try to understand the issues they face was highlighted at a programme to create awareness on sexual minorities at St. Aloysius College on Tuesday.
At a programme organised by the College’s Department of Mass Communication in association with Arivu Yuvakendra, an NGO from Bantwal, many transgenders addressed the students.
One of them said, “Change should take place at the family level. Until then it is difficulty for the society to accept us the way we are.”
The person was a member of Lingatwa Alpasankyata Samudaya Sangha, a city-based organisation of sexual minorities.
The programme was inaugurated by Nadamani Nalkur, president of Arivu Yuvakendra.
Respect to transgenders
He regretted that the society knew only male and female as sexes and was not inclined to accept transgenders.
He observed that mythological texts like Ramayana and Mahabharata exhibited respect for transgenders.
Gynaecologist Poornima J. said health should be the first priority for transgenders and she also provided them an opportunity to meet her personally and discuss their health issues.
Praveen Nikhil, coordinator of the sexual minorities association, stressed the need for society to change the perspective of thinking.
The gathering discussed the challenges faced by sexual minorities in various facets of society. An open forum was also held, where the audience interacted with the speakers.
