Residents in 23 villages of Yadgir district are facing acute drinking water shortage and are forced to walk miles to get water.
Records show 17 villages in Yadgir taluk, including Gurmitkal Assembly constituency, and three each in Shahapur and Surpur taluks, are facing crisis. Many borewells have dried up in Mudnal, Arkera (B), Keshwar, Chandraki, Putpak, Hosalli (M), Borbanda, Pogalapur, Abbetumkur, Allipur, Dharmapur tanda, Puspul, Empad, Sambra, Gunjanoor and other villages in Yadgir taluk and Kongandi, Munmutagi, Wadagera (T) villages in Shahapur taluk while, Kolihal, Hagaratagi and Karibavi villages. This forced the people living in these villages to use the untreated stream water for drinking. P. Sunil Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat, told The Hindu on Wednesday that instructions had been given to officials to attend to the drinking water problems immediately. Mr. Kumar said Rs. 45 lakh has been released to each of the four Assembly constituencies in the district. As per the action plans, 40 new borewells have so far been drilled.
