Getting revved up in middle age

When a midlife crisis hits, men often go for a set of hot wheels. It seems women do too. A recent survey in the US by global marketing research company Ipsos reveals that women also want midlife-crisis cars.According to the survey, one in four people was likely to buy a car at this time of life, 30% of them men and 21% women.The term "midlife crisis" refers to a phase most people go through between 40 and the early 60s. They question their personal or professional life, take up new activities or fret about physiological signs of ageing.Naturally, sports cars were popular among men (24%), whereas 19% of women said they would go for a sports utility vehicle.Readers of The Times proved the truth of this in a snap survey on Facebook yesterday.Precocious de Pre Aquaphox was keen on a Porsche 918, and Chuma Cash Mdladla Ngcobondwana said a Lotus sports car would be his midlife-crisis car of choice.The Porsche 911 was more appealing for Xhanti Mfazwe and Peekay Mtambo, and Solly Zucchero found the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 roadster attractive.Each gender had its idea on what constitutes a "youthful" colour for a car.Nearly a quarter of men, 24%, chose black, compared with 21% of women, who chose red.But when asked what colour they would choose for their car, 20% of the respondents said black, 19% chose silver or grey, and 17% wanted blue or red. Yellow was the least popular, getting only 2% of the votes.Nearly 30% of men felt good about being middle-aged, compared with 22% of women.And ageing has its perks.Robyn Farrell, the executive head of 1st for Women insurers, said middle-aged people qualified for cheaper car insurance premiums because they have been found to be "more responsible" drivers...
