German to be back in KVS as ‘optional’

German as a subject is set to be back in Kendriya Vidyalayas when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the German government during his three-nation tour beginning Thursday, including France and Canada. Only, this time it will be offered as an optional subject.

In November 2014, the Union HRD ministry under Smriti Irani had refused to renew a three-year-old agreement between Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Goethe-Institut for teaching German , virtually imposing Sanskrit on students.

Irani had said the MoU was “in violation of the Constitution” since German was being taught as the third language. Now, the ministry has drafted a new agreement in which the clause that German will be taught as athird language has been dropped, instead classifying it as an optional subject. “Failure to clear the exam for German will not affect a child’s progression to the next class,” a senior official said.
