Tension in Ooty maternity hospital

April 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Udhagamandalam:

Tension prevailed for sometime at the Government Sait Memorial Maternity Hospital here on Tuesday following a group of persons including some social activists alleging that there was negligence in providing medical attention to a woman.

Some of them told The Hindu that Manimegalai (26), wife of a physical education teacher, was delivered of a male child through caesarean section late on Monday night. Early in the morning, doctors had found her condition to be causing concern and decided to shift her to Coimbatore for specialised treatment. However, since there was considerable delay in arranging for an ambulance, anger mounted among relatives.

Resident Medical Officer in-charge H.Sivakumar said that after assessing the baby’s weight it had been decided to go in for caesarean section. The surgery was performed by K.Chithra, chief obstetrician from the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Since bleeding had continued, arrangements were made to take the woman to Coimbatore. Owing to the low haemoglobin level, steps were taken to stabilise her condition before sending her down. It was to avoid further complications. On the reported delay in getting an ambulance, he regretted that since the ambulances were requisitioned even for minor ailments often there was difficulty in getting them for emergencies.
