PATNA: Cine actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar, Congress national spokesperson Ajay Kumar and former Kerala governor Nikhil Kumar broke coconuts to flag off the second phase of Bihar Congress’ ‘Kisan Mazdoor Nyay Padyatra’ from the party’s state HQ at Sadaqat Ashram here on Tuesday, amid slogan shouting and drum beating.
The ten-day padyatra, being led by BPCC chief Ashok Choudhary, will culminate at the Vrindavan Ashram near Bettiah in West Champaran on April 16.
While Choudhary, accompanied by party workers, would march on foot up to the Vrindavan Ashram, Raj Babbar and Ajay Kumar — who arrived from New Delhi to join the padyatra — went on foot and by a boat up to Hajipur in Vaishali.
The padyatra aims to inform farmers and rural populace about the “havoc” the Narendra Modi government’s Land Acquisition Ordinance-2015 is creating for their lives.
Over 1,000 party workers accompanied the padyatris on foot up to the local Gandhi Ghat on the bank of Ganga. The padyatris sailed on boats to Hajipur, mainly to avoid traffic snarls on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu.
Party legislators Sadanand Singh, Ram Chandra Bharti and Ajeet Sharma and former BPCC presidents Chandan Bagchi and Anil Kumar Sharma were also present when the padyatra was flagged off. After reaching Hajipur on Tuesday evening, the Congress leaders addressed a public meeting where they criticised the central government for its “anti-farmer and anti-poor policies”.
The first phase of padyatra, christened ‘Buddha to Gandhi’ yatra, began from Bodh Gaya (the place of enlightenment of Lord Buddha) on March 20 and concluded at Shaheed Sthal in the state capital on March 25 with a resolve to continue the agitation against the Centre until the Modi government recalled its controversial land ordinance. The party is also demanding that the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, enacted by the UPA government, be continued.
