Woman killed in Ambattur, ex-driver held

A 67-year-old woman was strangled at Ambattur and her five-sovereign gold chain was stolen on Tuesday afternoon. Later in the evening, police arrested a former driver of the family.

CHENNAI: A 67-year-old woman was strangled at Ambattur and her five-sovereign gold chain was stolen on Tuesday afternoon. Later in the evening, police arrested a former driver of the family.
Police said Nirmala, wife of Gurunathan, 72, was at her house in Pandian street on Santosh Nagar when a man came around 1:15 pm saying he wanted to rent the vacant first floor of her building.
She took the man, who seemed in his late 20s, to the first floor, and after about 15 minutes the man came down and told her husband she had fainted. Gurunathan immediately went up and found his wife lying unconscious.
He immediately took her to a private hospital where she died.
The body was moved to the Stanley Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
Later in the evening, police arrested Vinod, 24, a former driver of the family, sources said.
Police said they were also searching for CCTV footage from cameras installed in the neighbourhood to verify the identity of the murderer.
Neighbours were also questioned regarding the incident, police said.
At 1:15 pm a man to her home saying he wanted to rent the vacant first floor of the building. The woman took the man upstairs and after some time the man told her husband that she fainted upstairs
