Eminent surgeon S.S. Siddareddy, who was instrumental in popularising the two-child family norm in the Hyderabad Karnataka region, died at a private hospital in Bengaluru after a brief illness on Friday. Dr. Siddareddy (81) leaves behind his wife Guramma Siddareddy, former Chairperson of the Karnataka State Women Commission, his son Vikram Patil and daughter Rajashree Reddy. He was the founder president of Family Planning Association of India in Bidar and was also instrumental in opening the branches of the FPAI in Kalaburagi and Raichur districts. His last rites were conducted at his farm in Bidar on Friday.
He was a strong campaigner for vasectomy or population control through surgical procedures in men. He conducted camps to create awareness about the issue among rural youth. He also conducted and organised surgeries in the Bidar FPAI office. He was associated with other organizations like Bharat scouts and guides and Rotary Club of Bidar.
