Anna Hazare likely to join farmers’ rally in Bhavnagar

Under the new banner, the farmers of the state will take out a rally from Umergaon in south Gujarat.

The farmers of Gujarat Khedut Samaj have formed a new committee, known as “Gujarat Khedut Samithi”, to fight for farmer-related issues. Under the new banner, the farmers of the state will take out a rally from Umergaon in south Gujarat to culminate at Pavalyari village in Bhavnagar district, where Anna Hazare is expected to address a huge gathering of farmers in May.

Over 150 farmers from six different farmers’ associations of Gujarat gathered at Kayavahoran village in Vadodara on Sunday afternoon, to attend the farmers meet, organised under the banner of Gujarat Khedut Samaj. The meeting discussed issues affecting farmers in the state and how to fight against it so that farmers don’t lose out. The meeting was under the leadership of Sanat Mehta president of Gujarat Khedut Samaj. In the meeting, opinions of different farmer leaders were taken into consideration on how to deal with issues, like power supply in agricultural fields, new land ordinance, base price for sugarcane, state express highway, farmer suicides due to damaged crops, etc.

The meeting ended on Monday afternoon where the farmer leaders had formed a new committee — Gujarat Khedut Sangharsh Samithi — whose chief coordinator would be Sanat Mehta and 11 farmers had been made committee members.

Committee member of Gujarat Sangharsh Samithi Jayesh Patel of Surat said, “We have formed a committee to make farmers more aware that if they are united nobody can snatch their land and that their issues would be listened to and a proper solution found. We have also decided to take out a rally in the second week of May, from Umergaon in South Gujarat to Pavalyari village in Bhavnagar as part of awareness campaign. The rally would be one week long and will cover different parts of Gujarat.”

He added, “We are in constant contact with Anna Hazareji and we invited him on Monday to address the farmers meet at Pavalyari village. We expect that over 50,000 farmers from different parts of Gujarat will be present at Pavalyari village. We are sure that he will attend the meeting.”
