Hawkers beat up constable for taking action against illegal trading in Mulund

Agroup of hawkers manhandled a constable in Mulund on Saturday for taking action against illegal trading in the area.

Balkrishna Babar, 54, suffered scratches and injuries to his head. Local resident Datta Bajandari, 35, was arrested, while the other accused are absconding.

The Mulund police said that the incident occurred around 8 pm near Ganesh Gawde Road, Rohidas Nagar. Babar, a beat marshal with the Mulund police station, confiscated good from the hawkers and insisted on taking them to the police station for obstructing traffic.

At this point, Bajandari, who was allegedly drunk, got into an altercation with Babar. He slapped and shoved Babar around, and the other hawkers joined him. Police arrived soon after to take Bajandari into custody while the others fled. Inspector Prakash Mansukh of Mulund police station said: “Bajandari, an unemployed local, gets into fights often. His wife sells vegetables nearby. He has been remanded in police custody and we are looking for the others.”
