BELAGAVI: Hundreds of farmers led by former BJP Union minister Babagouda Patil held a day-long dharna in front of Belagavi MP Suresh Angadi's residence at Vishweshwaraiah Nagar here on Saturday. The protesters were opposing the land acquisition ordinance passed by the BJP-led NDA government.
Farmers gathered at Rani Channamma Circle and took out procession towards the MP's residence.
They sought an immediate withdrawal of the ordinance. Verbal clash took place between farmers and police, when the latter asked agitators to stay 30m from the MP's residence.
Farmers raised anti-BJP slogans and alleged that this government is not for the poor, but for the capitalists and industrialists. MP Angadi came out of his residence and tried to explain that the ordinance is in favour of the farmers but in vain. Following the developments, DCP Anupam Agarwal visited the spot and increased security.
Angadi told reporters that the opposition parties are misleading people against the ordinance which is beneficial to farmers. "However, the state government should take a final call and decided whether to implement the Act or not," he said.
